Mark Chaplin
CEO, Disc Go Technologies Inc.
Age: 30
Mark Chaplin turned his invention of a CD and DVD repair system into Disc Go Technologies, which saw revenues jump 35 per cent in the past two years, to $3 million in 2004.
As the company's CEO and president, Chaplin grew the company from 2 employees in 2002 to 15 today, and he has added high profile clients such as Blockbuster Video.
Chaplin's Eureka moment came after he grumbled about one of his damaged CDs and his friend Ron Haufler came to the rescue by buffing the disc with equipment originally intended to remove scratches from vehicles.
The two became partners and cobbled together a group of shareholders who trusted Chaplin to lead the company. He designed an automatic disc repair machine that sells for US$60,000 to used-CD stores, video rental outlets and other big disc users.
"We sell the machine and charge 20 to 30 cents for each disc the owner repairs," he said. In exchange, Disc Go supplies chemicals, maintenance and customer support on the machines, which have counters to mark each disc fixed.
Chaplin has partnered with distributors in Australia, New Zealand and Europe and counts global sales as a big part of his recent success.
His plans are to roll out a desktop disc repair system in 2005, which he expects will double his sales volume within five years.
He is pumping Disc Go's profits into building a 26,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Campbell Heights technology park, where he plans to move at the end of 2005. He explained that he is currently squeezed for space in a 5,000-square-foot Langley facility.
