Troy Moreira
President, Premier Marine Insurance Managers Group
Age: 30
The 9/11 terrorist attacks changed the face of the insurance industry, said Troy Moreira, president of Vancouver-based Premier Marine Insurance Managers Group.
"There were new opportunities, but you had to rise to the challenge," he said. "The public does not always like it but prices went on the rise. We could make a better return and we went out and pushed as hard as we could."
During 2004, he expects the company will secure total sales of $38 million, accruing $4.5 million in commissions. Since Moreira took over as company president in 2001, Premier has enjoyed a three-fold increase in revenue.
It has also diversified its line of insurance products. When Moreira's father started the business 15 years ago, it was primarily involved in insuring vessels. "It was always a very small business and it was writing the yacht business," he said. "When I joined the company it grew almost tenfold, both in size and in scope."
While the yacht business remains important, the residential construction sector is now the single biggest sector for Premier.
"It is very fast-paced and deals are often last-minute, so we have to have the services there immediately. People would be surprised how many high-value homes are being built for six, seven and eight million dollars. We specialize in insuring the construction of homes with a high net worth."
The company now has eight classes of core business, with diversification offering opportunities for further growth. Around 90 per cent of its business is underwritten by Lloyds Underwriters, with the remainder by ING Canada.
