Rochelle Grayson
COO, Donat Group Enterprises Ltd., Age: 39
A computer lab in the early ’90s and a chance encounter with the Internet led Rochelle Grayson to a lifelong passion for media and the art of communication.
“I think that it’s just been really a curiosity and passion of mine in terms of how people connect,” said Grayson.
Her mother, who was an opera singer, raised Grayson in Germany where she learned to speak fluent English, German and Spanish.
She believes her early exposure to show business contributed to her fascination with the production value of the entertainment industry and eventually led her to Donat Group Enterprises Ltd.
Donat develops online social media applications for the entertainment and knowledge management industries.
Prior to that, Grayson held a number of key executive positions with various media companies including: Obehave! Entertainment, Media 2.0 Consulting and Twemes.com.
She’s also moderated panels for the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show, New Media Day in Vancouver and the Whistler Film Festival, but she believes her greatest attribute is her ability to communicate and motivate others.
“I would say my biggest tool in my arsenal is really motivating others, and finding out what it is that makes them be best,” she said.
Since she joined Donat in 2007, Grayson has doubled its staff and she expects to double it again by the middle of 2009.
“The company is growing pretty phenomenally, but it’s also migrating from very entrepreneurial-driven to much more of a multi-million dollar company.”
She’s also involved in her community, has worked as a mentor for the Vancouver YWCA’s Connect to Success program and raised $200,000 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
Grayson admits her favourite James Bond movie is 1962’s Dr. No, but she refuses to allow that two-letter word to hinder her company’s potential.
“A lot of the work I’ve done is primarily focused on North America and what I want to do is … take things to a global level.” •
