Steve Hawboldt
President, Yellowridge Construction Ltd., Age: 39
Steve Hawboldt would prefer it if his career were for his eyes only.
As owner of successful construction business Yellowridge Construction Ltd., the Port Moody-based entrepreneur isn’t one to flaunt his success, but with an annual revenue of $76.2 million, it’s hard not to notice.
Yellowridge projects include the University of British Columbia’s new medical school at its Health Science Centre, an addition to the Shuswap Lake General Hospital and a new seniors care facility at the Quesnel Complex Care Facility.
Construction is a family business for Hawboldt, who spent summers working construction projects for his dad when he was younger. He then went on to complete a diploma in building technology at the British Columbia Institute of Technology.
“There really wasn’t much of a thought process; it was really just a natural progression,” said Hawboldt.
He said the highlight of his career was when he purchased Yellowridge at the age of 30.
“At that point my mindset really had to change and focus on, ‘Hey, now this is my business and I’m solely responsible for it,’” he said.
Yellowridge employs 80 people, and Hawboldt recently inked a deal to bring on three new partners.
“It’s kind of gotten to the point now where it’s a little bit much for one person to be handling.”
He said construction is more like a hobby than work, but he believes his success is thanks to good mentors and a simplistic approach.
“I think I had some strong mentors when I first started out, and with that I was able to focus and concentrate and stay directed, and not [try] to get involved with things I [didn’t] understand, so just keeping it simple.” •
