Samantha Legge
VP of marketing and digital media, Canada Wide Media Ltd., Age: 39
Growing up in the shadow of her high-profile father, it was difficult for Samantha Legge to make a name for herself, but her successful revitalization of TV Week magazine provided some measure of solace.
As VP at Canada Wide Media Ltd., Legge is the publisher of TV Week and Granville magazines and she’s also behind the company’s recent acquisition Youthink, a youth-oriented publication.
Even though Legge has been a member of Canada Wide’s board of directors since 1992, she wasn’t always interested in following in her father’s footsteps.
“I tried my best to stay out of the family business,” said Legge.
She graduated from the British Columbia Institute of Technology in 1988 after successfully completing a marketing management program.
She worked other jobs until 1994, when Canada Wide began to aggressively recruit her.
“After about six months, they lured me and I haven’t looked back since,” she said.
In 2001, she completed her MBA at Royal Roads University and was ready to begin the revitalization of TV Week, a magazine she’d read since she was six years old. She transformed the magazine into an entertainment guide, and sales improved.
In 2007, she launched Granville magazine, a publication with a focus on sustainable urban living, and although she works long hours, Legge believes some of her best ideas happen outside the office.
“I came up with the idea for Granville while I was walking my dog.”
She is also heavily involved with her community and sits on the board of directors for the Theatre Under the Stars, is a volunteer with the YWCA Vancouver and a past director of the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre. •
