Business in Vancouver December 30, 2008-January 5, 2009; issue 1001
Dan Miller
Partner, Dorsey & Whitney LLP, Age: 37
He may not work for Queen and country, but duty still called when Dan Miller responded to an e-mail on his BlackBerry while on a beach in Hawaii a few years ago. That seemingly innocuous move ultimately led him to be involved in one of the biggest deals in B.C. – Genzyme’s US$584 million hostile bid for Anormed in 2006.
“There’s a certain part of me that says I shouldn’t be checking my e-mail on the beach, but on the other hand, it doesn’t take very long at all, and it didn’t get in the way of the vacation.”
Miller’s quick responsiveness is one of the qualities that he credits to helping him build the Vancouver office of Minneapolis-based Dorsey & Whitney LLP into a multimillion-dollar practice.
Many of his skills come from his experience working in New York. As a junior associate, he capitalized on a number of opportunities to take the lead on various transactions and gained experience and relationships many young lawyers aren’t able to develop.
A specialist in U.S. corporate and securities law, Miller has been involved with some of the largest players in the oil and gas sector, including Penn West Energy and EnCana Corporation.
Though born in Boston, Miller was raised in Vancouver before heading back to the U.S., graduating magna cum laude at UCLA. He studied law at the University of Toronto and then was admitted to the bar in New York, practising there for nine years until being recruited by Dorsey to build the Vancouver office.
In addition to being a father of two young boys, he is also on the board of the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver and a member of the resources committee for Make-A-Wish Foundation of B.C and the Yukon. •
