Stefan Moores
Owner, MDC Moores Development Corp., Age: 33
Experience is everything for Stefan Moores, and he has no shortage of it.
The entrepreneur started his real estate development company, MDC Moores Development Corp., four years ago when he moved to Vancouver, but it’s just the latest stop in a long line of noteworthy experiences for Moores.
His interest in business began at Queen’s University, where he earned his first degree, a BA in economics, but it wouldn’t be his last.
From there he travelled to the London School of Economics, where he earned a master of science degree and then moved on to Stanford University, where he graduated in 2003 with an MBA.
Although he’s well-educated, Moore’s believes his degrees are just tool kits that have allowed him to get into doors that would otherwise have been closed.
“Arguably, I think that I’ve learned more in my travels around the world than I have in school. I think travel is the single biggest educator in the world,” said Moores.
In 2002, he became the vice-president of corporate development at Victor International Corp., a luxury land developer in Michigan.
He stayed with Victor for three years before he decided he wanted to use his development skills to start a company of his own with a focus on sustainability.
“I was trying to figure out a way to bridge capitalism and kind of things that have a little bit of a soul,” he said.
Since then, he’s successfully launched his business and sold the first phase of his Talasa development in Kamloops.
At Talasa, Moores sold 124 condominiums in less than three hours representing more than $30 million in sales.
Moores is also the managing partner of the Bamberton redevelopment on Vancouver Island, a LEED gold community modelled after Victoria’s Dockside Green. •
