George Rubin

President, Day4 Energy Inc., Age: 34

As a father of three young children and president of a growing tech company, George Rubin has barely a quantum of solace these days as he builds Day4 Energy Inc. into a global competitor in the solar energy market.

The company, which manufactures solar power modules using its own patented process, has seen tremendous growth in a few short years. From a company with 15 staff and $1.9 million in revenue in 2006, it’s grown to employ more than 270 people producing global revenue of $60.2 million for the first nine months of 2008.

“It’s a fairly elaborate organization that’s growing quickly. On the flip side, I’ve got three kids at home ranging from five months to five and a half years, so that adds to the package,” said Rubin.

He continues to expand the business, increasing his Burnaby plant’s production capacity to 97 megawatts’ worth of solar modules by the end of the year, up from 12 megawatts in 2007.

Born and raised in Moscow, Russia, Rubin came to Canada 11 years ago to pursue a career in corporate finance, a radical shift from the career path he could have pursued after earning a master’s degree in quantum radio physics from Moscow State University.

After completing a diploma in financial management and a degree in accounting from the B.C. Institute of Technology, he worked at Goepel McDermid Securities prior to its sale to Raymond James and then at Yorkton Securities Inc.

He joined Day4 Energy in 2002 after helping his father, Leonid, connect with Macdonald, Dettwiler and Associates co-founder John Macdonald. The meeting ultimately led to the creation of the company in 2001.

He’s thankful for the opportunity to work with his father. Together, they have been able to support various community programs through the company, including Canuck’s Place, the United Way and Habitat for Humanity. •
