Steve Tatone
CFO, Commercial Group of Companies, Age: 38
Steve Tatone is the man with the golden record, and he attributes some of his success to a straightedge methodology: “Just being efficient, using your systems, using your methodology to get things done without missing things,” said Tatone.
He has employed that mantra well in his role as CFO at Commercial Group of Companies, a custom truck body manufacturer based in Delta.
Tatone was hired on a contractual basis at Commercial in 2004, but quickly proved what his experience could do for the company. Since then, Commercial’s revenues have grown to $80 million annually from $10 million, and Tatone was promoted to CFO in 2006.
His business career began at the University of British Columbia where he earned a bachelor of commerce degree.
He began articling for PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) in Vancouver and earned his chartered accountant designation in 1995. In 1997, he left PWC and moved into the tech industry as a director of finance with Top Producer Systems Inc.
Tatone said he had some “ups and downs” in the tech sector, and didn’t like the fact that it was so difficult to build a successful company in that industry at the time of the dot-com crash.
He left the tech sector in 2003 and consulted with friends and colleagues before his next move.
“I wanted something with the excitement of tech, i.e., growth and the ability to do a bunch of new things and keep me excited about going to work every day,” he said. “But I also wanted something a little more stable, something with a bottom line, something in a more traditional industry.”
He soon found himself in the trucking industry with Commercial and he’s never looked back. In fact, it’s nearly impossible to keep him looking anywhere but forward.
“We’ve got a ton of growth opportunity, we’re just scratching the surface.” •
