Canadian online advertising revenues rose 16% in 2011, according to survey results released this morning by the Interactive Advertising Bureau of Canada (IAB Canada).

The survey found that online advertising revenues rose to $2.593 billion in 2011, compared to $2.232 billion in 2010.

The IAB is forecasting that Canadian online advertising revenue will increase to $2.8 billion by the end of 2012, as it continues to narrow television's lead as an advertising channel. The IAB fund that the Internet's share of total advertising revenue grow to 21.7% in 2011 from 19.4% in 2010.

The survey also found that in 2011:

  • Search and display advertising rose 19% to just under $1.1 billion;
  • Display advertising grew 22% to $840; and
  • Classifieds and directories lost some ground, dropping 2% from 2010.

Those three types of advertising generated 96% of all online advertising booked in Canada in 2011.
