Program launched to help business revert to PST

The B.C. government is launching a program in January to help more than 100,000 businesses register to collect PST, which will return to take the place of HST from April 1, 2013.

The program, eTaxBC, is an online service intended to make administration of the sales tax easier for businesses. Businesses can register for the service starting January 2, 2013.

Seminars are also being offered to chambers of commerce and other business organizations. As well, the province is offering webinars and one-on-one consultations with provincial tax specialists.

There are 100,000 businesses in B.C. that will need to collect the PST, and most of them are familiar with the tax.

However, an estimated 30,000 of them are new businesses that may not have had any experience with the PST, which was replaced when the provincial sales tax and goods and services tax (GST) were harmonized in July 2010.

The government was forced to enact legislation reverting back to the PST as a result of a referendum in 2011.
