This year’s Influential Women in Business honourees will share some of their stories at Business in Vancouver’s awards luncheon on April 14 at the Fairmont Waterfront. Lifetime Achievement winner Julia Levy, along with Janet Austin, Sarah Morgan-Silvester, Ida Goodreau, Janine North and Cybele Negris will tell us a little about their success in business.
These women have been nominated and selected based on criteria of business success, power and influence within their industry and the business community at large.
They serve on community and corporate boards covering a wide range of issues and industries. Their stories are important to tell because they shed light on the quality of businesswomen with the experience and the required depth of knowledge needed to participate in and contribute to corporate governance. Companies who make a point of building-in gender diversity around the boardroom table reap the benefit of increased business success.
Results from a Google search related to research on gender diversity in business include many studies with a common theme: improvement in business performance when more women are involved at the top.
Most importantly it is the sum of the parts – men and women working together – that benefit our companies and communities. The women we are profiling today and honouring on April 14 are in senior leadership positions and have board experience. Their stories and lessons learned are varied and compelling.
Now in its 11th year, the Influential Women in Business Awards have honoured many of B.C.’s most successful businesswomen. A complete list is can be found on page 10.
Judging for this year’s awards took place in January after a four-month call for nominations. Previous winners Jane Peverett, Liz Watson and Jill Bodkin, along with BIV editor Timothy Renshaw, selected the honourees from more than 50 nominations. The Lifetime Achievement Award was selected by BIV staff. Next year’s call for nominations will begin this summer.
On April 14, the CBC’s Gloria Macarenko will emcee the awards luncheon. Tickets are available online at www.biv.com/iwib. Always a sold-out event, interested attendees are advised to register now.
Leadership lessons for mid-career women
Last October, Leadership Lessons from Influential Women in Business was launched. Developed for women with leadership aspirations, this event provided an opportunity for women to interact with senior business leaders in a series of roundtable discussions.
Many of the discussion tables were “hosted” by previous Influential Women in Business honourees.
This event, created in partnership by Business in Vancouver, the Professional Women’s Network and Young Women in Business, is again in the planning stages for a repeat event in October 2010. •
