BIV Magazines: LifeSciences 2008 President’s Report Karimah Es Sabar, President, LifeSciences British Columbia To all the members of our life sciences community, whether among us here in British Columbia, or from the many corners of the world that are home to our extended family of colleagues, I thank you for your partnership and support. As you will read in the following pages, it’s an exciting time for life sciences in British Columbia, with new investments being made, new technologies being developed, and new commercial successes on the horizon. What makes British Columbia unique however is the diversity of organizations all working in concert to achieve this success. Our recent 10th anniversary of the LifeSciences British Columbia Awards provided a clear illustration of how readily this community comes together in this success. The event was our largest ever, drawing more than 600 guests from the local and international life sciences community to celebrate the achievements of the 2008 recipients – a group which represents and celebrates the diversity of strengths across British Columbia’s many life sciences sectors – inspiring beyond biopharma, beyond medical devices, beyond our forests and beyond our oceans. On-hand to help congratulate these recipients was the Honourable Gordon Campbell, Premier of British Columbia, along with numerous additional elected officials and bureaucrats from both the federal (NRC-IRAP, Western Economic Diversification, Industry Canada, International Trade, NSERC) and provincial governments (Ministries of Economic Development and Advanced Education, and the BC Innovation Council). Each of these is an integral contributor to the life sciences industry in British Columbia, and a key partner in our success. I would like to sincerely thank them not only for being on-hand for that very special evening, but for all of the support they provide year-round. I would also like to recognize our fellow associations with whom we work so closely, one of our most important being Genome British Columbia. Whether here at home, in the midst of India, China, Europe or wherever we may find ourselves, Genome BC is always beside us. CEO, Alan Winter, chair, David Dolphin and the entire Genome BC team exude professionalism and poise, and when we stand together, we stand with strength. LifeSciences British Columbia is, in fact, supported year-round by a roster of sponsoring organizations, our appreciation for which is genuine because we see daily the impact of their support, and what a critical part of the BC life sciences ecosystem they are. Each of these is listed at the bottom of this page, and to each, I offer our gratitude. I also want to recognize our colleagues from pharma, who are stepping up to make a difference in British Columbia, breaking down barriers of the past and establishing a new era of partnership and co-operation. No organizations, however, are more responsible for the development of our industry than our universities, research institutions and centres of excellence such as the BC Cancer Agency, Prostate Centre, Centre for Drug Research and Development, Brain Research Centre, and the Centre of Excellence in HIV/AIDS, inspiring beyond science, beyond discovery. In the following pieces, you will read of just a few of our goals for the year ahead. The one element that ties all of these together is the fact that we would never be able to undertake any of them without an array of partners from around the world. So just let me express our sincere appreciation for each of the unique contributions you continually offer our association and our industry. • |
