An August conference will aim to teach small businesses in Vancouver how to use social media to reach a key demographic – millennials, otherwise known as Generation Y, defined as those born in the 1980s and 1990s.
The conference, which is sponsored by HootSuite, Simon Fraser University’s Beedie School of Business and Telus (TSX:T), will bring together local small businesses owners with digital media experts.
“There’s a gap and small businesses are suffering,” said conference co-founder Lesley Yuen.
“They want to sell to millennials, but they don’t know how to reach them. For a crowd struggling to get any online engagement, walking them through the process of creating a social media marketing strategy is much more useful.”
Citing a study done by Balihoo, conference organizers said 71% of social media participants are more likely to purchase goods from a brand they follow online.
There will be a pre-conference networking event on Thursday, June 20, followed by the OMG Social Media Conference on August 15.
