Famed movie director James Cameron’s recent visit to Alberta to check out the oilsands was surprisingly thoughtful and uneventful. Unlike many celebrity activists, he seemed to have a grasp of the issues involved and he offered balanced and reasonable criticisms.
However, what Cameron should have mentioned during his visit is that the underuse of renewable energy resources worldwide is a major reason why Alberta’s non-renewable oilsands can be developed so profitably. And if the world began to rely more on renewable, green sources of energy and less on limited, non-renewable energy supplies, B.C. could surpass Alberta’s wealth and show the world that prosperity can be created by working with nature rather than against it.
