Creating computer-generated vehicle collisions and populating an empty Cape Town stadium with tens of thousands of football fans are just two aspects of the visual effects (VFX) work Vancouver studio Image Engine has created for the latest Hollywood thriller.

As sole VFX vendor for Safe House, released in cinemas this past weekend, Image Engine has created more than 370 photoreal VFX shots for the movie.

The key shots included augmenting chase sequences with crashes and explosions as well as fully computer-generated vehicle collisions. Other work included face replacements, matte painting, digital gore, green-screen composites, set extensions and explosions.

The work also represents a growing body of Image Engine’s invisible effects work.

“Image Engine is known primarily for its specialism in creature work and digital environments, but invisible effects is also a core competency of the studio,” said Jason Dowdeswell, the company’s head of studio.

“Of course, when your work goes unnoticed, that’s when you really know it’s a success,” he added.

Image Engine’s work on The Thing was recently nominated for a Visual Effects Society award.
