In the fierce competition for West Coast-bound cargoes, Port Metro Vancouver (PMV) has launched a plan to up its competitive edge by increasing trucking efficiency.

PMV and partners in the container drayage sector have announced a new collaboration initiative aimed at improving truck turn times at the port.

The plan sets out a framework for increased co-ordination between supply chain partners, including the port, the container trucking community and container terminals. It will set benchmark service standards and mechanisms to define, measure, monitor and evaluate the performance of each participant against the established benchmarks.

Peter Xotta, vice-president of planning and operations at PMV, welcomed the agreement.

“PMV has seen a sustained increase in container volumes, representing great news for container terminals, the container drayage sector and the economy – but with growth comes the need for more efficient transactions at each point along the supply chain,” he said.

“This agreement marks a new beginning. By working collaboratively, we will see better outcomes that benefit everyone.”

This initiative comes on the heels of a GPS-based port truck efficiency pilot program, announced in February this year.
