Consultants at PwC Canada calculate Vancouver’s 2010 Winter Olympic Games boosted the province’s gross domestic product (GDP) by $2.3 billion, created 45,000 jobs and resulted in $1.1 billion worth of contracts for B.C.-based companies.

PwC released its investigation of Vancouver’s Olympics (Report 7) on October 27.

The report found that nearly 650,000 people from outside B.C. visited the province for the Olympics in February 2010. Roughly 407,000 of those were international visitors, with 324,000 coming from the United States.

“Report 7 provides the best snapshot to date of the impacts of the 2010 Games on the economy and communities in Canada, as we were able to replace some earlier economic modelling estimates with actual data from the Games period and the nine months following,” said Michael Calyniuk, PwC’s leader of economics and statistics practice in B.C.

According to the report, the $2.3 billion boost to B.C.’s GDP came between 2003 and 2010.
