AgriMarine harvests first container-raised salmon in China

Vancouver-based fish rearing technology company AgriMarine Holdings Inc. (TSX-V: FSH) has begun to harvest the company’s first chinook salmon reared in solid-wall closed containment in China.

Vancouver-based fish rearing technology company AgriMarine Holdings Inc. (TSX-V: FSH) has begun to harvest the company’s first chinook salmon reared in solid-wall closed containment in China.

The company, which has developed and commercialized proprietary floating closed containment technology for rearing farmed salmon, said it has successfully proven its technology by rearing salmon in the Benxi region in China.

The Benxi farm is rearing rainbow trout and chinook salmon to desired market size in approximately 14 to 16 months.

The company said the Benxi harvest will continue through the summer and fall and the fish will be sold through distributors to five-star hotels and restaurants.

In October, the company announced it had obtained a license to sell its farmed trout and salmon throughout China; previously, it had been restricted to selling its products to a limited number of major cities. The company noted that, further to previously announced expansion plans, two additional 24-metre tanks are being fabricated and are scheduled for delivery later this summer, which will bring the farm’s total number of tanks to four.

The company notes that the new tanks will increase production capacity for fish sales in 2012.

At press deadline, AgriMarine’s stock was up more than 15% to $0.34. Calls to AgriMarine were not returned by press deadline.
