Airline consortium proposes alternate jet fuel pipeline route

Airline consortium Vancouver Airport Fuel Facilities Corp. (VAFFC) is proposing a new route for a jet fuel pipeline that has received substantial community backlash in Richmond.

VAFFC is proposing to build a new jet fuel delivery system to serve Vancouver International Airport (YVR). The project includes a marine terminal and fuel-receiving facility on the south arm of the Fraser River and an underground fuel pipeline to YVR.

The original planned pipeline route was south to north via Shell or No. 5 roads, then east-west, generally along Bridgeport Road. Last year, the VAFFC asked that its review with the Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) be put on hold so it could revise the plan to route the south-north segment along Highway 99 instead.

This week, the VAFFC announced that it’s canvassing for comments for the new Highway 99 proposal.

VAFFC formally submitted the additional route option to the EAO on November 3, 2011. The public comment period addressing the Highway 99 option runs from January 11 to February 1, 2012.

Last June, Business in Vancouver looked at the controversy that has been brewing around the project. (See β€œNot in our backyard” – issue 1130; June 21-27, 2011.)
