David S. Smith has resigned as the CFO of Ballard Power Systems (TSX:BLD) effective January 30 to join Finning International Inc. as executive vice-president and CFO, it was announced Monday.
In the interim, Ballard's corporate controller Jay Murray has been appointed acting CFO. An external search for a new CFO for the fuel cell developer and manufacturer is underway.
Smith spent the past eight years with Ballard and made many important contributions, according to Ballard president and CEO John Sheridan.
Smith had previously been Ballard's vice-president, controller from October 2000. Immediately prior to joining Ballard, he spent 16 years with Placer Dome Inc. as vice-president, corporate relations, vice-president, business development, and as regional vice-president and CFO in the United States, Chile and Canada.
