Vancouver-based Barkerville Gold Mines Ltd. (TSX-V: BGM) has received provincial approval to develop an open pit gold mine at its Bonanza Ledge property near Wells, B.C.

The company said this morning that the permit will allow it to develop a mine producing 73,000 tonnes of ore per year for four years.

“Approval of the Bonanza Gold Mine is a major accomplishment for Barkerville Gold Mines in its close to 20 years of exploration in the region,” company CEO Frank Callaghan said in a statement. “This will mean a lot to the residents of Wells, Quesnel and the Lhtako Dene Nation.”

The mine site is on the southwest face of Barkerville Mountain. The company plans to truck mine products to the company’s QR mill near Quesnel, where it will be processed to gold ore.

Last year, the company told Business in Vancouver about its plans to bring back gold mining to one of Vancouver’s original gold rush towns. (See “Junior miner pouring gold near legendary mining camp” – BIV Business Today, August 13, 2010).
