Business productivity in B.C. rose at a faster clip in 2010 than in 2009, Statistics Canada reported November 23.

Unfortunately, this province’s productivity growth lagged behind the rest of Canada.

The national number cruncher determined that B.C. productivity increased 1.2% in 2010, following a 0.9% increase in 2009.

Canada-wide, productivity rose 1.9% in 2010 after a decline of 4% in 2009.

B.C.’s productivity gains in 2010 came as there was a 3.5% advance in total business output and a 2.4% increase in the number of hours worked.

B.C.’s business output and the number of hours worked in the province declined in 2009.

Real gross domestic product (GDP) in the province came primarily from manufacturing, forestry, construction and support activities for mining and oil and gas extraction.

Forestry, mining and retail businesses were most responsible for an increase in number of hours worked in B.C.

New Brunswick’s 4.1% productivity boost in 2010 was the highest in the country.
