B.C. drivers are very distracted behind the wheel, according to a new Ipsos Reid survey.
The survey comes while Solicitor General Kash Heed is investigating whether to ban the use of cellphones while driving.
Survey results showed that nearly all of respondents (93%) admitted to participating in some sort of distracting behaviour while driving.
For example:
73% ate or drank while at the wheel;
69% sang while driving; and
66% spoke on their cellphones.
Heed said in June that he would look into a Victoria Police Department request to ban speaking on cellphones while driving.
Ipsos Reid's survey also found the average B.C. driver spends almost 11 hours a week in the car.
Almost all drivers (96%) admit to wasting gas even though they indicated fuel efficiency is important in a vehicle.
Wasting gas was defined as either letting a car idle for more than 10 seconds or driving more than 10 kilometres per hour over the speed limit.
