B.C.'s electricity load dropped by a mere 1.04% during Earth Hour.

Enthusiasm varied for the initiative which encourages people to douse lights and refrain from using energy-sapping devices such as televisions, computers and heaters for one hour.

Some of the 80 participating communities in B.C. saw consumption fall less than 1%. Others, such as Burns Lake, saw energy use drop 7%.

Overall, British Columbians saved 64.6 megawatt hours of electricity the equivalent of turning off about 1.4 million lights.

The last two annual Earth Hours, however, saw larger energy savings.

In 2009, British Columbians reduced energy 1.1%. In 2008, the energy saved during Earth Hour represented a 2% reduction.

The World Wildlife Fund hosted the global initiative that B.C. Hydro sponsored locally.
