Pink salmon fished in three areas of B.C. has been granted an environmental certification from the independent certification body Moody Marine Ltd.
Moody awarded Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification to pink salmon caught in:
- the Fraser River and its tributaries below the Mission Bridge;
- north and central coasts, including the Queen Charlotte Islands; and
- the inner south coast, which includes Johnstone Strait, the Strait of Georgia, northeast and mid-Vancouver Island, Toba and Jervis inlets.
MSC certification means the fishery has been found to be sustainable and well-managed, following a rigorous assessment that included an open, transparent process and scientific peer review.
“The industry is extremely happy to have the MSC validate the responsibility and careful management of the pink salmon fishery,” said Gigi Seals, a salmon fisherman who chairs the BC Wild Salmon Council.
“This year, we’re seeing above-average returns of salmon stocks in many areas, and with several of the salmon species, including sockeye, chinook and coho as well as pink.”
