The $563 million renovation of BC Place stadium has spawned a $6.5 million lawsuit related to the installation of the roof’s intricate cable system.
Executives at subcontractor Freyssinet Canada Ltee, which installed cables during the 28-year-old venue’s overhaul, are suing:
- contractor Structural Heavy Steel Construction (SHSC);
- general contractor PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc.; and
- site operator B.C. Pavilion Corp.
SHSC won a $122.9 million contract to complete a range of work, including more than $30.1 million related to erect cables – work that Freyssinet agreed to do when it bid on the contract, according to the statement of claim.
Freyssinet and SHSC officials also agreed that the two companies would jointly share control over labour deployment.
Freyssinet started work promptly and had a number of disagreements with SHSC during its construction. Some of that friction arose when SHSC permitted Montacier International Inc., which is a related company, to use labour at costs higher than Freyssinet agreed to.
The two companies had a workable relationship, as long as SHSC continued to make the monthly payments that Freyssinet executives expected, according to the statement of claim. But those payments stopped in early 2011.
“There remains due and owing to the plaintiff from [SHSC] $6,466,892 for work performed,” the statement of claim reads.
