The Real Estate Foundation of B.C. recognized leadership, innovation and collaboration in sustainably and land conservation in B.C. at its 2011 Land Awards gala at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver November 3.

Winners were determined in four categories: private sector, public sector, non-profit and individual.

Parklane Homes won the private sector award for its River District project – a new neighbourhood that is set to rise on the East Fraserlands.

Metro Vancouver won the public sector award for its new regional growth strategy: Metro Vancouver 2040: Shaping Our Future. (See three-part series in Business in Vancouver, starting with “Banking on transit’s power to drive growth” – issue 1145; October 4-10.)

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) won the non-profit sector award for its Darkwoods forest carbon pilot project, which harnesses the power of the carbon market to further large-scale conservation in B.C.

By purchasing Darkwoods for conservation the NCC eliminated the threat that those forests would be eliminated through logging.

Mark Angelo won an award for being an individual land champion. Angelo is an internationally known river conservationist, speaker, paddler, teacher, writer and chair of the British Columbia Institute of Technology’s Rivers Institute.
