B.C. takes post-Olympic jobs hit

Six provinces boosted total employment in March compared with February.

B.C. joined Alberta, Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island as places where total employment fell.

About 46,800 fewer British Columbians had work in March compared with February. The province's unemployment rate rose to 7.9% from 7.7%.

The three other western provinces all have lower unemployment rates. All other provinces have higher unemployment rates.

Nationally, 18,000 more people were employed in March compared with February. The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 8.2%.

According to Statistics Canada's labour force survey, industries with notable employment increases in March were professional, scientific and technical services; construction; and natural resources.
