The first increase in more than a year for natural gas prices for B.C. residents is coming April 1.

The B.C. Utilities Commission approved the request by Terasen Gas to increase rates by $0.66 per gigajoule, or about 6% to the total average gas bill for customers in the Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley, the Interior, North and the Kootenays.

The company said the cold weather in many parts of North America and the recovering economy contributed to increasing natural gas prices.

Residents in Whistler, Vancouver Island and Fort Nelson are not affected by the increase.
