Best Buy Canada plans to create a new division of retail stores focused exclusively on selling mobile phone products and services.
According to the Burnaby-based company, its Best Buy Mobile stores will be located in shopping malls across the country. Each will be approximately 1,800 square feet. Best Buy plans to open its first stores in Greater Toronto before the 2008 Christmas shopping season.
It also plans to expand its mobile phone departments in its stores to approximately 800 square feet of display space to sell phones and services from every Canadian mobile phone network.
The move is a departure from Best Buy's retail format of being a one-stop shop for personal electronics. A wholly owned subsidiary of Best Buy Co. (NYSE:BBY), Best Buy Canada also owns and operates Future Shop stores.
