Bioplastics company seeks international patents

A Vancouver company that makes plastics from plants has received encouraging feedback on it application for international patents.

Solegear Bioplastics, which makes biodegradable plastics from corn, has applied for international patents for its Polysole bioplastic.

The company received written opinions Thursday from the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, which is acting as an international patent searching authority.

The written opinions indicate Solegear’s applications contain claims that are “novel and inventive,” according to a company news release.

The opinions are not binding on international patent offices, but provide the company a sense of what the scope of its patents might be, the company said.

“These patent applications protect key components of our technology platform, and support our organizational commitment to scientific development and innovation,” said Solegear founder and CEO Toby Reid in a press release.

Conventional plastics are made from petrochemicals, which can be recycled only two to four times and do not decompose once landfilled.
