While British Columbians are among the most careful to take preventative steps to avoid becoming the victim of fraud, B.C. residents are also the most likely to carry out risky behaviour with their financial information, according to a survey by TD Canada Trust.

About 95% of B.C. residents say they do something to protect their personal information with 77% saying they shred documents and 57% say they shield their personal identification number when making a purchase with their debit card.

About 10% have reduced their daily withdrawal limit and 7% change their PIN every couple of months.

However, British Columbians were the most likely to have sent their credit card number in an e-mail (27% versus 21% of Canadians), or told someone their debit card PIN number (12% versus 10% nationally). About 9% carry their PIN in their wallet versus 7% of Canadians.
