Canadians were a little more frugal when travelling abroad in the third quarter of 2010 as visitors to Canada were more willing to open their wallets
The result was that Canada’s travel deficit, along with deficits around the world, fell from an all-time high during the quarter, according to Statistics Canada data released Friday.
StatsCan reported Canada’s travel deficit stood at $3.4 billion during the quarter. That’s down $235 million from the record $3.7 billion deficit during the second quarter of 2010.
Spending by visitors to Canada rose 2.3% to $4.1 billion between July and September. Canadian travellers, in contrast, spent 1.8% less ($7.5 billion) during the quarter than they did in the previous three-month period.
The Canadian travellers who were the most free-spending were those who went to places outside the U.S.
Spending in non-U.S. locations grew to a record $3.2 billion, up 2.7% from the second quarter.
