Canadian investor sentiment holds steady: Manulife

Governments worldwide might be awash in debt, but investor sentiment in Canada remains steady, according to Manulife Financial.

Governments worldwide might be awash in debt, but investor sentiment in Canada remains steady, according to Manulife Financial.

Manulife released its quarterly Investor Sentiment Index Wednesday, noting most Canadians continue to be optimistic about real estate investment.

Still, Canada isn’t without its challenges.

According to the poll, 87% of the 1,000 people surveyed said they were concerned about heightened oil and gas prices, while other issues such as health care, national debt and interest rates are also worries.

“Not surprisingly, Canadians remain concerned about a number of important issues that influence the strength of our national economy,” commented Paul Rooney, president and CEO of Manulife Canada.

“It is important to note, however, that while Canadians are concerned about the price of gas, oil and health care, their optimism for investing has remained consistent and steady throughout this year.

The poll showed that Canadian investor sentiment has held steady this year, rising one point to +29 since March.

But as strong as investor confidence might be, consumer confidence hasn’t fared so well.

According to a Conference Board of Canada report released earlier this month, confidence dropped for the third straight month in July, with Canadians expressing concern about future job prospects.
