Canadians spent 3.9% more at restaurants, bars and caterers in January than they did in January 2009, according to Statistics Canada data.
Most of that growth, however, happened outside British Columbia.
Brtish Columbians' spending on food services in January 2010 compared with the previous January increased just 1%.
The provinces with the biggest year-over-year spending growth on food services in the month of January were Saskatchewan (9%), Prince Edward Island (7.3%) and New Brunswick (7.1%).
Total spending nationwide on food services in January was $4.1 billion.
Fast food eateries grew sales 5.2% year over year in January while full-service restaurants grew sales 4.4%.
In contrast, pubs and bars saw a sales dip of 1.8%. Catering and other special food services suffered a 2.2% sales drop year over year.
