Canadians are among the most tech-hungry and savvy in the world, market-research company TNS Canada has found in a new survey.

According to the survey, Mobile Life 2011, Canadians are well above world averages in their purchase of smartphones, with 41% of survey respondents owning one of the devices relative to a global average of 28%. It noted that 22- to 30-year-old men are driving the high numbers.

The survey also identified that while just 7% of Canadians currently own tablets compared with 5% of North Americans, 31% of Canadian survey respondents plan to buy one of the devices over the next six months. It identified 31- to 40-year-olds as the key demographic interested in tablets.

It noted 63% of Canadians consider a tablet an “additional” gadget, and only 14% intending to buy the device to replace their PC.

Looking forward, the survey said 40% of Canadians are interested in using a “mobile wallet”: a cell phone that can be used as a credit or debit card. Currently, it said, 10% of Canadians have used one of the devices.
