Canadians lost out on 2009 market gains: Franklin Templeton

After one of the most pronounced market corrections in decades, Canadians decided to get out of the market and miss the corresponding recovery, according to a survey by Franklin Templeton Investments.

After one of the most pronounced market corrections in decades, Canadians decided to get out of the market and miss the corresponding recovery, according to a survey by Franklin Templeton Investments.

In the survey conducted by Angus Reid Public Opinion, 87% of Canadians did not invest in the equity markets in 2009. And about 58% said they do not plan to invest in 2010.

Market knowledge is a contributing factor to an investor's investing intentions, the survey found. About 57% of those with a university education plan to make new investments, as are 62% of households with incomes over $100,000.

Despite the recovery, Canadians are far more skeptical about the equity markets. About 40% are either suspicious or timid about the market, and fewer Canadians consider themselves as opportunistic or risk-taking investors.
