Canadians to spend 11 hours gift shopping: survey

The average Canadian’s holiday plans include making up to five trips to the mall and spending 11 hours of holiday shopping for family and friends, according to a survey conducted by Ipsos Reid on behalf of PayPal Canada.

The average Canadian’s holiday plans include making up to five trips to the mall and spending 11 hours of holiday shopping for family and friends, according to a survey conducted by Ipsos Reid on behalf of PayPal Canada.

And, if not for the Internet, the average consumer would likely spend more time at the mall: 54% of Canadians will be avoiding malls during the holidays by doing at least some of their shopping online.

That figure rises to 74% amongst Canadians who are 18 to 34 years old.

Canadians’ biggest holiday shopping peeves, according to the survey, are crowds and lines (49%) and not being able to find a unique gift (14%).

PayPal Canada conducted the survey to coincide with the launch of its new microsite, dubbed Escape the Mall, aimed at helping Canadians find holiday deals at top online retailers.

For the survey, a sample of 1,036 adults from Ipsos' Canadian online panel was interviewed between November 3 and November 8.
