A Vancouver mining company is being recognized for being environmentally friendly.

On Monday, Capstone Mining (TSX:CS) was awarded a clean industry certification from Mexico’s federal attorney for environmental protection for its Cozamin copper mine.

The mine is in Zacatecas, Mexico, and produced 34.1 million pounds of copper last year.

“This important achievement represents the culmination of a 24-month process of standards and management system documentation and implementation by the Cozamin mine site,” said Darren Pylot, Capstone’s president and CEO.

“We congratulate our Cozamin operating team on attaining this certification, which places Capstone in a relatively limited group of mining companies in Mexico that have made the voluntary commitment to the highest standards of environmental stewardship.”

Last week, the company launched a $725 million cash and share deal to buy Vancouver-based Far West Mining (TSX:FWM). (See “Chilean copper drives Capstone to buy Far West” – BIV Business Today, April 18.)

If the deal goes through, Capstone would enter a new growth platform in Chile, taking control of Far West’s highly prospective Santo Domingo project.

At press time, the company’s shares were down $0.04 to $3.92.
