Catalyst to curtail production at Arizona mill

Richmond-based Catalyst Paper Corporation (TSX: CTL) will curtail production of recycled newsprint at its Snowflake mill in Arizona by approximately 5,500 tonnes.

Richmond-based Catalyst Paper Corporation (TSX: CTL) will curtail production of recycled newsprint at its Snowflake mill in Arizona by approximately 5,500 tonnes.

The curtailment is to adjust for a shortage of quality waste paper, the company announced.

A company statement noted that the move also reflects the Catalyst's commitment to balancing production with orders and keeping inventory levels in check.

The Snowflake mill has an annual production capacity of 337,000 tonnes of recycled newsprint and uncoated specialty papers. The operation supports recovery and domestic recycling of more than 480,000 tonnes of waste paper annually and is the second largest private-sector employer in northeast Arizona.

The downtime totals approximately six days over the next several weeks and will be used to carry out maintenance.

In financial statements released in March, Catalyst Paper indicated a net loss of $396.9 million on sales of $1.2 billion during 2010.

According to the company, results were significantly affected by one-time charges of $304.2 million, including severance and impairment associated with the permanent closure of its Elk Falls paper mill and paper recycling division.

Stocks were down $0.01 to $0.27 at close Thursday. Calls to Catalyst for comment were not returned by press time.
