CN has signed its first container line to ship Asian freight through the new Port of Prince Rupert.
Cosco Container Lines Americas Inc. will begin shipping containers between Asia and the port starting in 2007's fourth quarter.
Founded in 1961, Cosco is part of China Ocean Shipping Company, which is headquartered in Beijing, China. It owns and operates 550 merchant ships with a total capacity of 30 million dead-weight-tonnes.
The Port of Prince Rupert's initial annual throughput capacity is expected to be around 500,000 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units). That total is projected to grow to two million TEUs per year as part of a broader port expansion plan.
