CN ordered to clean up Prince George site following collision and fire

The B.C. Ministry of Environment has ordered CN Rail to mitigate the environmental impact from the August 4 collision of two locomotives in Prince George.

The B.C. Ministry of Environment has ordered CN Rail to mitigate the environmental impact from the August 4 collision of two locomotives in Prince George.

The ministry's order requires the company to contain and collect any oil or gas that may be leaking into the Fraser River from the Prince George railyard and clean up the site and the river. CN is required to provide a cleanup plan by week's end.

Staff from Environment Canada, the Ministry of Environment and the Transportation Safety Board continue to investigate the incident.

The order comes two weeks after CN was hit with federal and provincial government charges resulting from a toxic spill into the Cheakamus river in 2005 that extensively damaged the ecosystem. More than half a million fish from 10 different species were killed when 40,000 litres of caustic soda spilled into the river after a CN train derailed.
