Coastal Contacts Inc. (TSX:COA) had its largest-ever sales day March 21, recording more than $1.1 million in orders.

“It was a milestone to pass the million dollars in revenue. [It’s] a good day,” founder and CEO Roger Hardy told Business in Vancouver.

Coastal Contacts has long been known as a contact lens seller. But Hardy pointed to strong sales of eyeglasses as a key reason why the company was able to breach the $1 million sales threshold on a single day.

“The key thing is 5,000 pairs of glasses driving our business,” he said.

Coastal Contacts began selling eyeglasses in 2008 (see “Coastal sees lucrative future in online sales of eyeglasses” – issue 1054; January 5-11, 2010).

Hardy added that the top 10 selling eyeglasses were the company’s private brands. Shipments of eyeglasses have reached more than 100,000 in about 18 months.

He said his eyeglasses business would continue to gain momentum and drive the company’s growth. In the past six months Coastal Contacts hired more than 170 people and is continuing to hire, Hardy said.

“We’re probably looking for 20 more people right now.”
