The recession won't prevent Canadians from taking vacations this summer, but most are planning to stay close to home, according to a Desjardins Financial survey.

The study conducted by Ipsos Descarie found that 70% of Canadians plan to travel this summer, but 81% are opting to travel within Canada for at least part of their vacations.

About 45% said they plan to travel within their home province.

British Columbians were the most likely to travel within their own province this summer, (81%), second to Ontarians (74%). Newfoundlanders were the least likely to stay in their province for their summer vacations (15%), followed by Manitobans (22%) and Saskatchewanians (25%).

Only 29% of travellers said they plan to vacation in the U.S. this year.
