Donation helps UBC open new engineering centre

The University of British Columbia (UBC) opened the Wayne and William White Engineering Design Centre November 2. Alumni Wayne and William White helped make the $8.5 million building possible with a $2.5 million donation.

The university’s engineering department will use the three-storey, 20,322-square-foot building to connect students in its various programs to promote interdisciplinary work

Wayne White is an investment adviser at Brant Securities Limited. William White co-founded and is managing partner of financial advisory services at IBK Capital Corp., an independent investment banking firm.

The Lower Mainland’s second largest university, Simon Fraser University, has recently secured several much larger donations.

They include:

  • $7 million in September from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation to establish a new Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre for Hellenic Studies;
  • $22 million in February from Keith and Ryan Beedie to establish the Beedie School of Business;
  • $10 million in September 2010 from Goldcorp Inc. to contribute to SFU’s capital campaign and create a Goldcorp Centre for the Arts Community Endowment; and
  • $8 million from the Tula Foundation to create the Hakai Network for Coastal People, Ecosystems and Management, which will enable SFU researchers to work with First Nations people.
