Montreal-based smoked meat franchise Dunn’s Famous Montreal Smoked Meat plans to open its first location outside Quebec in Vancouver at the corner of Robson and Seymour streets in May.

“We’ll be hiring about 50 people, but that number is approximate,” said Francis Lo, who is a co-general manager for the restaurant.

“We’re not having a job fair or any event but we have a website. We’re just taking applications for all positions starting soon.”

Lo told Business in Vancouver Thursday his 150-seat restaurant will be different from any of the other deli-style places that now serve Montreal smoked meat sandwiches.

Unlike locations such as Kaplan’s Star Deli on Alberni Street, Dunn’s Famous Montreal Smoked Meat does not require patrons to pay at the counter.

Instead, the restaurant will be a sit-down affair where diners can order from a much larger menu that includes pastas and steak.

“We’re going to import the briskets from Montreal,” Lo said. “I wouldn’t say we’ll be fine dining, but it’ll be a place where you can bring the whole family and you can order from a full menu.”

Dunn’s first opened in Montreal in 1927 and now has six restaurants in the province of Quebec.
