Federal government funds 400 small business internships

Canadian small and medium-sized businesses will again benefit from the labours of approximately 400 student interns, through the federally funded Small Business Internship Program (SBIP).

Canadian small and medium-sized businesses will again benefit from the labours of approximately 400 student interns, through the federally funded Small Business Internship Program (SBIP).

Minister of industry Tony Clement has announced that the federal government has renewed its investment of $3.5 million in the program.

The SBIP supports businesses’ competitiveness by helping them improve online marketing and e-business practices through the hiring of interns.

To be eligible, businesses need to have fewer than 500 employees, have operated for at least one year, have a website and a wish to enhance e-business capability, and be incorporated or a sole proprietorship and for-profit. They must also contribute a minimum of 25% of student wages and expenses.

Under the program, eligible businesses can recoup up to 75% of wages and benefits to a maximum of $10,000.

“Our government’s top priority is the economy,” said Clement. “Our investment in the SBIP is one of the ways in which we are helping entrepreneurs as well as creating jobs for post-secondary students.”

He added: “These young Canadians will gain valuable work experience while contributing to Canada’s economic recovery.”
