Canadian clean technology projects are set to receive $52 million in funding from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC), an arm’s length foundation created by the Government of Canada.
“Investing in these innovative technologies will have a direct impact on Canada’s productivity,” said SDTC chairman Juergen Puetter. “Supporting them will create jobs and diversify local economies while strengthening Canada’s position as a global cleantech leader.”
The SDTC supports projects that address climate change, air quality, clean water and clean soil.
Among the 17 projects receiving funding, five are with companies based in Metro Vancouver. These projects are:
- Ballard Power Systems
A zero emission fuel cell running on by-product hydrogen.
- S2G Biochemicals Inc.
“Bio-glycol” production using low-cost renewable byproducts of the biofuel, agriculture and forest industries as feedstock instead of fossil fuels.
- SWITCH Materials
A patented hybrid photochromic/electrochromic film for smart windows that automatically darkens when exposed to sunlight and lightens in response to an applied electric charge.
- Westport Power Inc.
A natural gas locomotive.
- CORVUS Energy Ltd.
A hybrid harbour tug boat.
These new investments bring SDTC’s total portfolio value to $1.8 billion. SDTC’s SD Tech Fund has completed 17 funding rounds, committing $515 million to 210 clean technology projects.
