Feds support youth employment programs

The federal government has announced more than $1.2 million in funding for youth employment projects at three Lower Mainland organizations.

The federal government has announced more than $1.2 million in funding for youth employment projects at three Lower Mainland organizations.

The funds will help 120 youth facing employment barriers, giving them job preparation and work experience through the federal Skills Link program.

Richmond Conservative MP Alice Wong, minister of state for seniors, announced the funds today.

“We want youth to be ready and trained for the jobs that will be in demand,” she said in a news release. “When given the tools and opportunity to succeed, there really is no holding them back.”

The funding will go to:

  • Gordon House Youth S.E.A.R.C.H., which will receive more than $495,000 to help 48 youth through its Youth Search Employment Program;
  • the DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society, which will receive more than $375,000 to help 33 youth through its Future Leaders program; and
  • the Mission Community Skills Centre Society, which will receive more than $368,000 to help 39 youth through its Express to Success program.

“By supporting projects like these that find local solutions to local challenges, we are building on our national strategy to create the best educated, most skilled and most flexible workforce in the world,” Wong said.
